THE ARCHITECTURE CHAPTER

Chapter history

The Royal Architecture Chapter is formed on November 14, 1910, after THS, the student union, decides that each of the six programs at KTH should be represented by a separate chapter. The first board of the chapter is made up of a chairman, a vice chairman, a secretary, and a club master.

In 1911

the first Architects' Ball is organized and in the autumn the first Förbrödringsfesten induction party for newly appointed A-technologists is held.

In 1916

Anna Mohr (the first female technologist to graduate) is elected as the chapter's "husmor", meaning matron or housewife (but probably also a play in Annas surname). The same year, the chapter's first dance evenings are organized.

In 1918

the operations are expanded with a Christmas party on St. Lucy's Day.

In 1920

the chapter holds its first masquerade at the Technological Institute (Teknologiska institutet) at Jakobsgatan 19.

In 1922

Gunnar Heimbürger is elected THS student union president, the first architect in this position!

In 1923

the tradition of a board gasque for the outgoing board of the chapter is introduced, this year taking place at the Gyldene Freden restaurant.

In 1927

KTH's anniversary ball is held in the Blue Hall in Stockholm City Hall. At this grand celebration, the Speech to the Woman (Talet till Kvinnan) is given by architect AV Fagerström, who receives good marks for his performance.

In 1929

Manne Carlmann is elected chairman of THS and becomes the second architect in this position.

In 1930

the Stockholm Exhibition, some of the chapter's members stand guard of honor during the king's inauguration of the exhibition. The same year, the new student union building Nymble, designed by former A-technologists Sven Markelius and Uno Åhrén, is also inaugurated.

In 1931

there is a lot of discussion within the chapter about what the chapter table flag in the student union building's dining hall should look like. After a committee is appointed to look into the matter, it is decided that the table flags should have the same design as the chapter's banner.

In 1932

the chapter has a long discussion with the new professor G. Asplund about the teaching. For the following gasque, they unexpectedly receive a lot of good wine from the professor!

In 1934

Anders Tengbom is elected as the student union chairman, the third architect to hold this position. In the same year, the chapter elects a sports director for the first time and during the Förbrödringsgasque, “Nollor” ("Zeroes") are spoken of for the first time.

In 1936

it is decided to establish a vice club master who will look after the interests of the chapter at the Old Student Union on Drottninggatan, where years 1 and 2 still attend. In the same year, a ball is held for the first time with the Swedish Architects' Association  (Svenska Arkitektföreningen) and the Stockholm Building Association (Stockholms Byggnadsförening) with the aim of raising money for the fourth-year students' study trip. To improve cohesion in the chapter, five beer evenings are also organized and to help the new first-year students, five study leaders (buddies) are appointed from the third year.

In 1937

the chapter's sports activities are expanded to include rowing when the chapter elects a rowing leader to lead its rowing team. This year too, a ball is organized for the fourth-year students, which is called the Grand Bal Fleuri. The name will remain for many years to come.

In 1938

the chapter is visited by architecture students from Trondheim, Norway. The guests are invited to a crayfish party at the THS sports cottage Osqvik, which is very appreciated. In the same year, a shooting representative ("skytteförtroendeman") is also established for the chapter.

In 1939

Walpurgismas Eve is celebrated for the first time in the student union building with a traditional gasque accompanied by an after-party at Hasselbacken all night long.

In 1940

the entire board of the chapter is called up for emergency duty, which leads to Malin Aminoff being elected acting chairman. During the war, the number of A-technologists is reduced to only 34.

In 1941

the chapter needs to serve brown beans and bread rolls on gasques because of the war.

In 1942

discussions take place with the chapters for Roads and Water (Väg och vatten) and Land Surveying (Lantmäteri) on how the subject “Urban planning and social order” can be improved.

In 1944

discussions are being held with SAR about “Teaching at Teknis and related problems”.

In 1946

the war is over and the position of foreign correspondent is introduced to relieve the chairman of the growing correspondence with England, Finland, Denmark, Norway and to some extent Russia. At the “nollerodd” rowing competition on October 27, the Architecture Chapter wins, to the surprise of the rest of the student union.

In 1947

the chapter has a "skutt" with buns and hot dogs. St. Lucy's Day is celebrated with coffee and glögg (mulled wine).

In 1948

the “Nollor”, meaning "Zeroes", get beautiful bow ties to put on when they start their program.

In 1949

Nils Ahrbom (who also modeled the motif for the chapter banner) becomes the first architect elected as the new inspector of the student union. In the same year, the chapter also gets a chapter hall with three rooms in the old photo lab. Two of these rooms are furnished as studios while one becomes a common room. Later, the chapter also gets its own photo lab with an enlarging device donated by the Department of Architecture.

In 1951

a competition is announced for choosing the design of the chapter pin, with Professor Nils Ahrbom, architect Sven Silow, and the chapter chairman as the jury.

In 1952

the competition for the chapter pin is decided and the winner is Bengt Edlund from the fourth year, with a pin in the shape of a silver megaron.

In 1953

the chapter's choir manages to win the student union's sångartäfvlan singing competition, thanks in large part to the choir leader Bo Fritzell.

In 1955

the chapter gets its own basement chapter hall in the Old Town at Yxsmedsgränd 3. In the same year, the chapter's standard bearer Carl-Johan von Grothusen stands guard of honour at Professor E. Lallerstedt's funeral. This almost becomes a disaster, however, when Carl-Johan faints during the service and falls onto the hard stone floor, but in the fall he manages to pull the banner close to him so that Lallerstedt's widow does not get it on her head!

In 1956

Hammarén's water tower is mentioned for the first time. This was an old architectural model that the new students (nollan) had to kiss as part of the inauguration rites. At the nollegasque, nollan performs a silent spex and the choir, as usual, wins the sångartäfvlan singing competition.

In 1957

or some other year in the 50s, the chapter manages to burn down the sauna at Osqvik and is most likely banned from the cabin for a while.

In 1962

the chapter initiates an exchange with Polish architecture students by request.

In 1963

130 people gather for the chapter's spring ball, held in Nyloftet at Skansen, where Professor O. Petterson gives an inspiring speech with construction engineering references.

In 1964

the chapter sends a delegation to Trondheim to attend their 50th anniversary. In the same year, the chapter joins the UIEA (Union Internationale des Étudiants en Architecture).

In 1965

the chapter magazine Tidningen A is published for the first time and the chapter hosts UIEA's first congress in Stockholm, attended by 261 architecture students from 56 schools in 27 countries. Unfortunately, the chapter is evicted from its basement in the Old Town during the year.

In 1967

The new A-building at Danderydsplan begins to be designed by Gunnar Henriksson and the word "Royal" is removed from the statutes.

In 1969

the name of the board of the chapter is changed to “Working group for chapter work” ("Arbetsgrupp för sektionsarbete").

In 1970

the architecture program moves into the new building, which immediately receives scathing criticism. Many important parts such as meeting rooms, a cafeteria and chapter premises are missing. The chapter magazine also changes its name to AR-CHE-TUR. During the year, the internal chapter order is abolished and the only positions that remain are a “contact person” and a “paper person”.

In 1971

the chapter donates 5,000 kronor to the communist guerrilla movement FNL in Vietnam.

In 1972

the chapter begins to be called the "Student Chapter".

In 1975

2,500 kronor each is given to the Chile Committee and the FNL. The student union withholds some of the chapter's financial assets.

In 1976

2,500 kronor is donated to the Chile Committee and the MPLA. A coffee maker is also purchased for the Triangeln common room in the school building.

In 1977

the Chile Committee is given 5,000 kronor. The chapter becomes more politically involved and supports striking groups.

In 1978

Nordic architecture students host a meeting in Stockholm, but participation from KTH is low. In the same year, the THS Union Council decides to give the chapter the withheld funds of 18,000 kronor.

In 1979

there are discussions about whether or not the student chapter should be dissolved.

In 1981

an attempt is made to open a pub in Triangeln, but it is closed due to lack of interest. The student chapter also organizes a competition for a symbol for the school. Leonardo da Vinci's "Vitruvian Man" wins, which still stands outside the old A-building.

In 1982

the THS chairman introduces himself to the student chapter meeting. A closer collaboration between the student union and the student chapter is discussed. Unfortunately, the initiative comes to nothing.

In 1983

the student chapter's material exchange is established on the initiative of Torgny Nordin and Per Granlund.

In 1984

a board with a chairman, secretary and treasurer is reintroduced.

In 1985

the THS membership of the chapter is questioned by Staffan Olofsson and an inquiry is appointed. The same year, the chapter receives funds from the school to purchase a piano.

In 1986

the poor engagement among the school's students is discussed again and new statutes are adopted. Demands for a centrally located smoking room are presented to the school.

In 1987

the chapter rents a room on Skeppsholmen for party activities together with the students at Mejan (Kungliga Konsthögskolan, the Royal Institute of Art). However, the operations are closed down after doubts in the club masters' accounting. The fraud involves 20,000 - 30,000 kronor.

In 1988

the investigation into THS membership is complete. On May 3, a vote is held on whether the chapter should remain part of THS or not. There is a clear majority in favor of continued membership. In the same year, a new board structure is introduced with lunch meetings once a week to handle current matters.

In 1989

the chairmen of the other chapters are invited to a meeting with the chapter where the school's premises are shown and collaborations are discussed.

In 1990

and the coming years, the school and student life are discussed. Teaching is criticized and students experience a rootlessness, stemming from, among other things, the geographical isolation.

In 1991

the chapter organizes its first major gasque in the student union building in 23 years. Other chapters are invited and happily participate. SAR's chairman Kristin Westerlund also participates and gives a positive assessment of the gasque and the chapter's awakening interest in student life. The chapter participates in Quarnevalen and at the Förbrödringsgasque the first year students play the spex Tessins lillpalt.

In 2007

a competition is announced for a new building for the architecture program, on a mostly empty plot of land on campus. Former A-technologists Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård win.

In 2008

the idea of starting a reception for newly admitted architecture students, which has not existed for many years, arises after the buddies of the S-Chapter take pity on some bewildered new architecture students at the reception in the City Hall.

In 2009

a small reception is tested. For the first time in over 30 years, Osqvik is booked. A crayfish dinner is held there in connection with the start of the semester.

In 2010

an official reception finally takes place with Amanda Ersson at the helm. To prepare, a gasque is held in the Upper studio on May 8. The reception groups from the S and Open chapters are guests and teach the architecture students how to gasque. It is the chapter's first gasque in many years and is a great success. The black turtlenecks with the chapter logo on them and the thick black glasses are introduced as buddy attire. The reception is financially successful and with the surplus a gasque bell of greater dignity is purchased. The bell is dedicated to the chapter's 100th anniversary and is unveiled at a large anniversary party in the Lower studio.

In 2011

the School of Architecture suffers a fire on May 4. The fire is disruptive to studies as well as chapter work. The chapter storage room is completely burned down. The only property that can be saved from the ashes is the gasque bell. The business relations association Arkipelago is started.

In 2014

the chapter works with the school's management on the upcoming move to campus.

In 2015

the architecture program moves into the new building on Osquars backe. The chapter's bar, the A-bar, keeps a high tempo and hosts many pubs. Before the move, a big closing party is held in the old school's courtyard, where head of department and vice-dean Anders Johansson gives a speech wearing a disco ball hat.

In 2016

the chapter gets a chapter hall on campus along with the IsB (construction engineering) chapter, at Teknikringen 20A. A second bar operation, Festeriet, is founded there. The first pub is held in November. Arkipelago arranges a furniture workshop for the first time, where students get to design and build a chair. The voted winners are exhibited at the Stockholm Furniture Fair.

In 2017

an event association is started and soon begins to host popular wine tastings. The position of EDI responsible (equality, diversity and inclusion) is established. A collaboration with the A-chapter at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland is initiated, with the aim of strengthening relations between architecture schools in the Nordic region.

In 2018

the chapter's statutes are thoroughly updated and a songbook is developed for the first time in many years.

In 2019

the board's structure is changed, dividing the work into a board consisting of a chairman, vice chairman, treasurer and a number of board members, and a Mega meeting consisting of the chapter board and the heads of associations. In the same year, the chapter holds two party weekends in the Osqvik student union cottage, as well as an autumn gasque where the A-Chapter at LTH in Lund is a guest.

In 2020

the chapter reforms its financial structure before Covid-19 paralyzes studies and chapter work.

In 2021

the purple boilersuit is introduced as general chapter clothing in addition to the existing turtleneck, after several votes on color, where both black and gray are popular options.

In 2023

sthe first sparks for the Fire Festival, the chapter's annual spring ball in memory of the fire at the old School of Architecture, are lit. In May of the following year, the first of these is held in the Building Association's House (Byggnadsföreningens Hus) in central Stockholm. The chapter also gets a new society with the Sports society.

In 2024

there is a rotation of chapter halls when chapters from Kista and Södertälje move to campus, and the Architecture Chapter moves in with the S-Chapter in oaSen at Brinellvägen 1. In the same year, the chapter magazine Skalan is restarted after the pandemic, and a year later the first issue is published.

In 2025

the board position of prop master is introduced, to be responsible for the chapter's physical assets.
